We Remember


Between 1939-1945, the University of Saskatchewan Geology Department lost eight of its graduates and former students to the Second World War. The following quote is from the 1959 Ore Gangue Golden Jubilee Reunion Book "The graduates wished that they might be remembered and on November 11th, 1948 a plaque bearing their names was unveiled by President J.S. Thompson. It was designed by Professor A.L.C. Atkinson".

Stewart Keddy B.Sc. 1940, Hon. in Geol. 1941. Capt. South Sask Regiment killed on active service. He was assistant editor for the Concentrates 1940-1941. He is listed as being part of a Museum Committee during the 1938-1939 school year.

Olav Alfred Ness B.A. 1941. P.O. - R.C.A.F. killed in flying accident near Prince Albert, Sask.

Lawrence Stanley Hill, B.Sc. 1939, M.Sc. (McGill). P.O. - R.C.A.F killed in action overseas December 29, 1940. He was the first Editor of The Concentrates, published in March 1937. http://www.veterans.gc.ca/eng/remembrance/memorials/canadian-virtual-war-memorial/detail/1800123

Robert James Pully, did not Graduate. Lt. South Sask Regiment killed on active service in Holland. He was elected President and was part of the activities committee, but was called away to war.

Richard Alston Scott B.E. 1942. Killed in active service, May 2, 1943.

Edward Franklin Klemmer B.A. 1939 (Dist.), Hons. In Geol. 1940, B.E. 1941 (Dist). Lt. Royal Canadian Engineers, Killed in Normandy, France September 5, 1944. He was the Ore Gangue President during 1940-1941 and Secretary-Treasurer 1939-1940.

Harold Ross Robinson B.A. 1940, M.Sc. 1942 (McGill). Killed on Active Service in Holland. Lt. Black Watch of Canada. Killed in action overseas. He was the 1940-1941 Editor of The Concentrates and assistant Editor 1939-1940. He is listed as being part of a Museum Committee during the 1938-1939 school year.
